egg'd

As a youth pastor's wife, you get used to the litany of schemes and attacks of the teenage variety...this, however is a first.

I saw them out of the corner of my eye. The car was light blue and she jumped out in a pair of skinny jeans and a green t-shirt. Her ponytail bounced with her step.

"Uh-Oh," I thought, mainly because I had been cleaning all day and didn't want to go to the door in my pajamas.

DING-DONG! My doorbell just rang. Do I open it, or just ignore it and hope that they walk away???

I glanced at myself in the mirror and decided honesty was the best policy. Putting my best foot forward (the one with some toenail polish left on it), I stepped toward the front door and opened it cautiously.

No one there.

But WAIT! There IS a carton of eggs setting on my doormat! I heard of Milk-men but Egg-men?

I knelt down to pick up the carton with "You've been egged!!!! :)" written on the top.

Classy.

Although, I probably will not attempt to eat them, this was probably the nicest form of egging that we'll ever have to endure. Thanks girls. You've made my day...

Only the first day of Spring Break. I wonder what other torture I'll succumb to this week.

{Lexi} | thirteen

I had to blog this session...why? Maybe because it was one of my favorites everrr...maybe because I'm obsessed with redheads...maybe it's because this girl reminds me of myself at her age. Not the gorgeousness, mind you (I wish) but more her personality.

I had the privilege of attending {Lexi's} 13th birthday party what seems like eon's ago in August? Her mother asked if I would get a few fun photos of the girls being, well, Jr. Higher's. Anyway, being short on time and daylight, we didn't get very many good ones. Feeling terrible about the fuzziness, noise and lack of light, I offered to come back at a later time and get some more of {Lexi} on her own. Her mom readily agreed and I was ecstatic. Have you seen how gorgeous she is? Tyler, Will and I headed over to Duncanville the other night and got to spend some wonderful time with their sweet family and I got to get me some serious portfolio images :)

So without any further ado, let me post some extras of my fave pics from {Lexi's} shoot!

She was having a hard time being serious at first.

She was just way too fun.

By the end she was getting really good at the 'model' look...I mean reeeeeaaally good.

I got her to laugh for a few though :)

Check out those uber cool green nails!

Here are a few from our fun night together with the entire fam...

There are 4 girls in this family! And boy were they lovin' on the Wilburstein and he was lovin' it :)

Will got up close and personal with a hockey game, some books and one of the girls. Ashlyn just kept saying over and over, "I can't wait to be a momma!" How sweet is that?

There are 2 boys in this family and somehow I only got a picture of one of them! Sorry Grant, please know that you are loved, over there on your Playstation. This is Garret. He loves his "church clothes" so much so that he gets his Sunday outfit ready...on Monday night. And when he finally gets to church on Sunday, he inspects the men. If he finds they've not met his expectations he asks, "Hey! Where's your tie!?"

I'm so blessed to be part of the Worth Baptist Church and to be able to worship and fellowship with some of the most amazing people. I'm so thankful for the friendship of this family. May the Lord bless them richly for all of their kindness and hospitality!

saturated in eternity

I had a conversation with a teenage girl the other day that really opened my eyes up. We were discussing the matter of "cliques" and I ventured to say that maybe this group needed to reach out a bit more to others instead of always hanging out with the same people. The response came as follows:

"Well, other people have said things about us being a clique, but we [the clique] talked about that and we decided that if we like hanging out with each other then why should we hang out with anyone else? We don't want to hang out with others because we love each other so much." (this was said in a very sweet manner, not rudely or with even an ounce of attitude)

I sat there, hoping to interject a peice of wisdom that would be heeded by the young girl, and not stuffed under the seat to rot and decay where other "jewels" I have given end up.

I started out, "Well, at least you're honest...but what happens if we only 'hang out' with those that we like? We stop being a Youth Ministry and become a Youth Group. Instead of reaching out, we become so exclusive that we don't minister to anyone but ourselves. That's not really the purpose of the Youth Ministry."

I went on to reference a message Tyler had JUST PREACHED on Wednesday night about "Saturated In Eternity." He told the funny story of one of his high school teachers that took a bottle of Eternity cologne on a trip with him. When he opened his luggage at his destination, he discovered that his bottle of cologne had been crushed and the contents of the entire bottle were distributed somewhat overwhelmingly onto each and every single garment he owned! He washed and washed his clothes but nothing could rid the smell of "Eternity" from his clothing. When he came back to school the following week the kids were almost knocked over with the stench. "What is UP!?" they asked their teacher. He told them the story and ended with the line, "I can't help it guys, it seems that wherever I go, I'm just saturated in Eternity."

The main point of this story being that our lives are lived simply from point A to point B. Lasting about as long as a vapor of steam (James 4:14). But eternity lasts, well, forever and ever and ever and ever and well, you get the point. What we do in this life is but for a moment, but living for Christ is a life spent living for others and laying up treasure that lasts for an eternity.

Was I saying that it's wrong to have close friends? Special friendships with people that are encouraging and fellowship with those of a like mind? No, of course not. But I was saying that if those friends were true and real and worth having, those friends would understand if you chose to sit with a visitor on Wednesday night instead of with them. Would understand you inviting someone to your house that isn't normally on your "Saturday Night Sleep-over" list. Would understand giving a hand to a struggling fellow believer or newcomer to our church family. These are the friends that would help you to be "Saturated In Eternity" and these are the friends worth having. And if you don't have these friends, why not reach out and find some friends like that?

Encouraging this young girl to live out the sermon she had just heard on Wednesday was an exciting and yet, humbling experience. Why? Because I know that in my own life there are days and I might add, weeks where I lived 'in the moment' instead of 'in Eternity'.

We are such selfish creatures.

From the beginning of man, to the end of time, we will either continue to live for self or decide to live "Saturated In Eternity". When I drive through Chic-Fil-A next week will I selfishly take my No.1 with extra pickle and pull off or will I take the time to hand the cashier at the window a tract with the life-saving gospel of Christ? Will I lounge on the couch and spend countless hours on Facebook and Lightroom or will I sit with my child on the floor, sing Bible songs and teach him about His sweet Creator?

What will you change? Will you pray and ask the Father to help you become "Saturated In Eternity" today?

When there's nothing you can do, but pray.

I know...it's been forever. I hate that I haven't written. But, somehow, whenever I started to write, I would think, "No, It's been so long..." Like that made it any better or something. We've just been so extremely busy. As a family. As Church staff. As a Mommy. My last few shoots with clients haven't been completely edited either. uhhggg...

That said, I'm writing about something that has been heavy on my heart lately. Youth. What more can we do to help them. But, on the other hand, what are we not doing? This situation has made me think. "What am I giving my life to/What should I be giving it to?" (this has all been going on for a long time now)

"She's totally confused," said Tyler, speaking of the girl who had just written me a message on Facebook. She seemed to be asking questions and trying to answer them, but unsure of herself. It's been a little while since this sweet girl left our youth group. We'll call her 'Angie'.

Angie, had come faithfully to each meeting of our churches youth ministry for about 9 months, when she got involved with "the wrong guy". That guy took her down the wrong path quick. She had been soaking up the truth like a sponge after her salvation. Growing so much spiritually, Tyler and I could hardly believe it. And through all of that growth, she assured us that she would be attending a Bible College in the Fall. We were so excited! But like Satan has done so many times before, he crept in, almost secretly and stole her heart in the form of a handsome young man, oozing "spirituality" and charm.

She didn't tell me about him until they had been dating for about a month. And she wouldn't have told me then had she not been badgered to death by me. I stopped by her house one afternoon to check on her. "He's a Jehovah's Witness, I went to his church last Sunday" came the reply to the question of which church she had attended the Sunday before.

A lump in my throat, my heart stopped for a second. "A Jehovah's Witness?!" I couldn't hide my astonishment or disappointment. He didn't believe Jesus was God, in Hell or a myriad of other Bible Truths. What was I supposed to say? Well, the conversation went a little like this,

"Does Tyler know about this?"
"Yes, he gave me a book to read."
"Have you read it?"
"Yes."

"All the way?"
"Almost."

She went on to say that she knew we believed differently. And I said that it was dangerous and a sin for her to be "unequally yoked." She said she understood. Later after a few weeks of missing church she called, said she knew she was doing wrong by being with him. I told her that I loved her and had been praying for her and that she was doing the right thing by breaking up with him.

She never did. She never came back.

We've had several Facebook conversations since then. Tyler was convinced that she was confused, I told him that I didn't think that she was but that she wanted us to know that she didn't agree with what we believed anymore and she was just trying to share with us her "new-found knowledge". I hoped secretly that he was right.

Today I got a message, "...I am not confused. My motive is not debate...Jesus is not God." Ok, so she's letting me know, that she doesn't want to carry on this conversation anymore. But what can I do? Am I to give up? Leave her alone, in her false doctrine and Satan-sent relationship?

The question really is...did I do all I could? I believe the answer is, "yes". I involved her, befriended her, gave her rides, prayed for/with her on spiritual issues, answered her questions from the Bible. We can do all we can do, in the end, it comes down to the fact that we all have Individual Soul Liberty. If 'Angie' has decided to not follow Jesus, then there's nothing I can do but pray.

And so I will. Please pray with me, for this young lady.

Last night was just for fun

So, I had the opportunity to just have fun and let some pre-teen girls soak in thier gorgeousness. Ha ha ha *wink. A friend of mine from church, Brenda, has a cutesie red-mopped daughter, Lexi, turning 13 this week! So she planned for the girls at the party to get a little make-over and then get pics done. Granted, by the time the make-up was done it was 7:50pm. And anyone who knows anything about natural light photography will tell you it's almost impossible to get anything under ISO of 800 after 7:50pm. So what did we do? We just shot at a high ISO and yes...even used a little bit o' flash *GASP, I know. I wouldn't have but, you should've seen thier sad faces when I said it was getting too dark.

So here they are...please don't judge my everyday performance on this. Like I said..."Last night was just for fun".

She is so stinkin cute! Happy Birthday Lex!

Check out her sweet friends!
from left: Lexi, Andrea, Tatum, Mariah, Abi, and Emily

I love her laugh! She's such a happy kid :)

She's in love with her tenni's.

Her mom made this gorgeous, scrum-diddly-umpsious cake!!!

Lexi is a natural in front of the camera. I told her mom that I was sorry we didn't get too many good ones, because of lack of light. But that I would love to do a shoot with just her! As a birthday present :) She agreed, so hopefully I'll be going out again soon...just for fun.

Maybe If I Will, They Will.

The trip we just took with our Juniors and Seniors was just wonderful. Thanks all of you for making it a blast! Hope you learned a lot from "Leadership 101".

An amazing few days with a few amazing people.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We were screaming and laughing all at the same time. And our laughter whipped past us and flew over the others in back and all the way off the rails. We stood and dismounted the car and headed down the steps that lead away from the coaster. "That was AwEsOmE!" she said.
I knew she would love it. She had never done that before. And she didn't want to do it then. But through trust and a little "peer force, forget peer pressure" she decided to try something new.

Ride after ride, she kept on trying new things. I did too. I rode backwards. I said I wouldn't ever ride backwards. But when the time came, I looked at her, brave, young and stronger than she was yesterday, and said, "If you will, I will." And she did, and I did.

I did it because of what it would do for someone else.

I did it because of my children.

I don't want them to grow up with a mother who "wouldn't" because more than likely that meant, they "wouldn't".
The road home, thick with dust and thoughts and childhood memories and songs, was long and breeded an atmosphere to think, to meditate. And I thought, "I did this because of my children? A silly ride or two, for those who will come behind me? What else will I do for my children?"

The answer came soft and low. It kept resounding through my mind like a bugle calling for the rescue of some lost lamb. Anything. Anything to help my child grow strong, grow full of grace and truth. I want them to be fearless and yet fearing the Father. I want them to be humble and yet bold to proclaim His name. I want them to be kind, tenderhearted and yet stand up against evil, holding forth the Word of Truth.

What if they grow up to not do these things...not fearing Him, not bold, not standing for right. What then? Will it be because I "wouldn't"?

Parents, we must keep standing for the truth. We must live holy, because of Him who is Holy! (1 Pet 1:15-17) Why would our children live for Him, if we are not willing to do so?

God help me to pray. To give my life to what You gave Your Life to. To boldly stand for the things that Your Word teaches!

Maybe if I will, they will.

"The Wild's really is wild!" - Paris Gray

I’m climbing these steps one step at a time. I can chose to skip one to step onto the next but not without looking silly and/or risking a nasty fall.

There are stairs everywhere here. I climb each and every one. As I climb, I hear voices in the background. One says, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night” and another, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in his way.” Memorization and Mediation is drilled into each one in attendance.

There is joy on almost every camper’s face. The waiting was hard, but, we’re finally here. They are so blessed to be at this place, and I wonder if they even know how blessed.

The counselors here are exuberant about running up and down the stairs. They’ve build up a lot of strength up until now. They’ve climbed these stairs thousands of times. Practice makes perfect. It’s hardly a task for them.

And my littlest friend and I keep walking and we pass others sojourners and they seem winded by the climb and it’s good to know that I’m not alone. It’s a tough climb for all of us. It would be so much easier to just stay at the top and not come down, and then I’d never have to climb. But to get anywhere you must be willing to go. And it’s not always a ‘Mountaintop experience’. If we didn’t have to climb we’d never know the joys of reaching our goal.

And as I keep on upward I think of the potential that these counselors meet with face to face every day. Our kids. Do they realize they are changing lives? I hope so, because they are. My husband wouldn’t be Tyler, the Preacher, today if it had not been for faithful camp staff, with hearts to serve the Lord. He would maybe be Tyler, the T.V. Salesman, or Tyler, the Lawyer, but not Tyler the Preacher. He would most certainly be, Tyler, the man running from God.

Here in this place there is so much joy. Joyful campers, joyful camp staff, joyful cooks, waitresses, janitors, office staff, guest speakers. Everyone here is so joyful! Ready to assist, prepared to aid, waiting to serve. Handpicked by God and placed here for a season. And I begin to think that joy is pretty contagious.

The preaching aimed specifically for the teenage soul, the verses chosen to penetrate the heart, one cannot leave this place unchanged, unless…unless they’ve decided to quit climbing. They have become weary of the trek, exhausted on the trail, winded by the challenge. They’ve sat down and fallen asleep. The hot and humid breeze of sinfulness fills their lungs, and there are bodies weakened by dehydration from the lack of the Water of Life.

But this place! This place is like the cup of cool water poured over their head to awaken, refresh and revive all those who would seek to be stirred. This is the time to arise and keep climbing, my camper friend! “Trying to walk in the steps of the Saviour, Upward still Upward we follow our Guide…”

There’s another on the stairs in the dark night. So difficult to see, he must be patient and most of all, he must follow One Who has walked these steps before. Thanks be to God that he has not left us comfortless. We are not without a Guide. His hand is there to lead, and it is mighty to save! “How beautiful to walk in the steps of the Saviour, Stepping in the light, Stepping in the light, Lead in paths of light.”

Higher and higher I continue to climb, until at last, I reach my destination. And I think to myself that God is great and that He is exalted in this place. And I know that even though these steps may be hard to climb, that I can reach the top. And with His help I can keep stepping through this life and when it gets hard and when the mountains I face seem insurmountable, He is with me.

He is everywhere and I’m glad He’s here. Here at the greatest Christian Camp in America!

Tori Gillit, signing off for now at the Wild’s of North Carolina.

Sunday/Monday, July 19th

It started at 8:35, this long long long long long trip to North Carolina. It started with a tired-from-a-long-day-at-church-baby. And thankfully it ended, with a baby that did surprisingly well. He slept all night only waking at bathroom stops and going back to sleep as soon as we pulled out of each gas station.

The sweet baby, watched the trees pass through the window, flirted with the girls, laughed at the boys and did so well, I thought maybe that we might actually have a good time at camp.

Tuesday, July 20th
This has been my first year at camp as a mom. And boy! What an experience it has been, for lack of a better word. I used to look forward to the service times, now I get sad, because I know it’s bedtime for the littlest camper. And who will make sure he is all tucked in, if I’m not there?

Today we took a hike down to the 2nd falls. Tried to take a ride in the giant swing. As I stood there in line, tears raining down because of nerves (yes, you heard me right, tears) Teddy, my would be partner on the swing saw her daughter crying because she was sick. "You're off the hook," she said. I stood there relieved and sad at the same time. Oh well.

We walked down to the nurses station, checked Gabi out of camp, then headed to her cabin to get all of her bedding and clothes. She slept all day that day, with a fever and sore throat.

Wednesday, July 21st
We did what we could, Will and I. He slept while I went to the Sponsor picnic and Tyler stayed in the room and watched him. I saw some old college friends there and that was pretty sweet. Later that night, because Teddy was in the room with Gabi, I got to go to Fun Night, watch the hilarious skits and take some pictures of our kids.

Thursday, July 22nd
We went to the "Family Reunion" at 1:00 in the afternoon, where we heard lots of testimonies and enjoyed seeing our whole youth group in one place. We had the best time together and got lots of pictures. The Sponsors went out and found a cake for Tyler and I to celebrate our anniversary and even bought me a beautiful plant.

The highlight of Thursday was that because Gabi was feeling a little bit better we (Teddy, Gabi, Will and I) decided to go tubing down the creek on the campgrounds. It was so much fun. When we got near the end, these boys were at the top of the bank shooting water guns at us. I used Will as an excuse so they didn't shoot me. Teddy tried to stay near me so that they wouldn't but it didn't really work. By the time we got out, she was sopping wet. Gabi started feeling bad again so they went back to sleep. She got up just in time to attend the service later that night. The Floyds watched my sweet sleeping baby while I went also!

Friday, July 23rd
It was the last day and I wanted to make sure that I got everything packed and still got to spend lots of time with the kids. In the afternoon, Teddy and I wandered down to the basketball courts where we found some of our girls. Elizabeth, Lauren, Gabi, Paris and Monica had just ridden the Giant Swing, and ya, I was a little jealous. I didn't even get to take pictures! Oh well. Elizabeth, Ethan, Emily, Gabi, Lauren, Teddy, Wilbur and I meandered into the Craft Shop, where we made some super rad leather bracelets. Maybe one day Will's bracelet will fit him ;)

After 2 or 3 trips to Cool Beans (the coffee shop) and what seemed like a million trips up and down stairs, it was finally time to go the the last meeting.

Bro. Farrell preached hard against sin and harder against the hold that is has on so many lives. He didn't mince words about following Christ. He told the story of Elijah and Elisha. Of how Elisha went home and burnt his cattle as a sign of 'no turning back' from the call that God had placed on his life. Of how he served others instead of always looking for someone to serve him. Of how even in death God used him.

Many lives were touched, a few were even changed, I believe. I was able to go out afterwards and pray with one or two. It was such a blessing to see the Lord continuing to work, even up until the last moment.

The trip home seemed so much longer. We didn't get started until 11:30pm. Tyler drove from 11:30pm until 8:00am and then slept a little and drove again later. We finally arrived to the church at about 6:00pm. Will was more ready to get home than anybody else, I think. I had to have been a close second.

Testimony service the next day at church was an encouragement to many. Tyler was given the opportunity to preach and he ran with it. He spoke of a real change of lives instead of just a decision made away from home, and of adults who strengthen the young ones around them with prayer and support.

It was one of the best experiences I've ever had. And having been to camp every year since I was about 12 years old, that's saying a lot. Eighteen years and this was the best of them. Amazing God, Amazing place. There's nothing else to say.
